End Earmark Spending in Congress
Turning Point Action
Take Action Now
To the Members of Congress who continue to support earmark spending:
Senator Mike Lee is right, it's time to abolish earmarks and restore fiscal discipline to the federal budget. The recent House GOP spending bills containing $6.5 billion in earmarks demonstrate why this reform is urgently needed.
Your support for earmark spending raises serious concerns about fiscal responsibility and alignment with America First principles. We believe this practice warrants elimination based on the following factors:
Lack of Fiscal Accountability
Earmarks bypass regular appropriations oversight, allowing members to direct taxpayer funds to specific projects without rigorous vetting. At a time of significant national debt, this practice undermines fiscal responsibility.
Questionable Spending Priorities
The recent House GOP spending package initially included controversial earmarks such as approximately $1 million for a Somali-led organization in Minnesota that Republicans requested the DOJ investigate, and $2 million for Vermont Legal Aid's immigration legal services program. While some controversial earmarks were removed after backlash, the $6.5 billion earmark package demonstrates the systemic problems with this spending practice.
Bipartisan Problem
Earmark spending enables both parties to use taxpayer dollars for political purposes. True fiscal conservatism requires rejecting this practice entirely, regardless of which party controls Congress.
We encourage members of Congress to:
Support Senator Mike Lee's efforts to abolish earmark spending
Vote against any spending bills that contain earmarks
Restore competitive, merit-based processes for all federal grant funding
Commit to transparent appropriations processes rather than selective project funding
It's time to end the practice of using taxpayer dollars as political currency. True fiscal conservatism means treating every dollar with equal discipline.
"Earmarks are just one more bad idea that we need to discard before we finally face the truth and do our jobs."
Mike Lee
U.S. Senator
