Oregon—Tell Your State Legislators to Support Utility Choice

Smart and digital utility meters are being deployed and mandated across Oregon without adequately informing consumers of the health, safety and privacy risks.

Unlike analog meters, which have been safely used for decades, smart meters and (some) digital meters emit toxic levels of pulsed radiofrequency (RF) radiation, pose a fire hazard and allow companies to sell private usage data in near real-time to third parties.

Mandating these utility meters is unacceptable – where there is risk, there must be choice!

Ask your state legislators to introduce/support legislation with the following protections:

● Utility Meter Choice. Allow consumers to opt out of smart/digital meter installations.

● Consumer Consent. Require utility companies to obtain consumer consent before installing smart/digital meters (i.e., require an opt-in).

● Protective Privacy Laws. Require utility companies to be transparent about how utility meter data is collected, managed, stored, used and sold.
