REAL ID is turning America into a surveillance state.

The federal REAL ID Act of 2005 mandates that states issue standardized, scannable driver’s licenses tied to a centralized data system. This effectively creates a national ID, violating privacy and undermining state authority.

Now, U.S. Senator Rand Paul has introduced the Safeguarding Personal Information Act (S.2769) to fully repeal Title II of the REAL ID Act — the law responsible for forcing this system on the American people.

What’s at stake:

Privacy: REAL ID enables tracking, scanning, and future digital surveillance.

Freedom: Federal law aims to block access to flights and federal buildings without a REAL ID.

State Sovereignty: Washington D.C. dictates how states issue IDs and manage data.

Increased Surveillance: REAL ID opens the door to future biometric mandates and digital IDs

Expansion Risk: The Secretary of DHS has unilateral authority to expand the requirements and required uses of REAL ID without going back to Congress for a vote. You may or may not trust the current administration, but we can all envision a future administration that would use this as a tool to take away our freedoms.

It’s time to repeal it.
