In Union City, there are already 2 cannabis dispensaries (marijuana shops). Yet Mayor Carol Dutra-Vernaci, City Councilmembers Jaime Patino and Scott Sakakihara voted "Yes" for another cannabis permit on 2625-2633 Decoto Rd, Union City, adjacent to homes and just 0.9 miles from James Logan High.

Alameda County Health Committee recently reported the number ONE cause of death for ages 18 to 44 is drug overdose. And marijuana is the number ONE drug of choice for 11th graders under 18!

The dangers of marijuana use include: addiction (1 in 10, 1 in 6 when starting before age 18); impairment of memory, concentration, thinking and motivation; lower IQ; dangerous driving; harm to the unborn, and negative impact on male fertility (per SAMHSA.gov, CDC.gov, NIH.gov and others).

Furthermore, marijuana use often leads to more dangerous drugs. On Sept. 5, Union City had 5 fentanyl overdoses where 2 people died; one was 17 years old. In addition to recent crimes related to cannabis, crimes against persons and property in Union City jumped 21% in 2022 (per UCPD report).

Since adults over 21 can have cannabis delivered, responsible adults keep harmful substances out of reach of youth and children. Thus, 56% of cities and counties in California do not allow ANY type of cannabis business, including these cities in Alameda County: Fremont, Newark, Pleasanton, Livermore, Dublin, Albany and Piedmont (per Dept of Cannabis Control).
