(Note: You don’t have to live in the City of Phoenix to send an email. If you live, work, shop, or just visit in Phoenix, you are a “stakeholder” and you should voice your opinion.)

The City of Phoenix is preparing to bring back their abusive red light and speed camera ticketing program. This is a part of the woke anti-car agenda we’ve been warning about. Their goal is to penalize you as much as possible to force you to drive less. This program would increase surveillance and ticketing in ways that raise fundamental privacy and due-process concerns.

Statistics from the city’s prior program show that at almost every red light camera location, there were zero serious or fatal injuries in the years prior to installing the cameras. Since the stated purpose of camera enforcement is to prevent fatalities and catastrophic injuries, placing cameras where no safety problem existed proves the true intention of automated ticketing – revenue generation. Indeed, the city confiscated over $1 million in fines yearly at ticketing camera locations with little or no safety problems. The vast majority of tickets were issued for mostly minor technical infractions that generally don’t pose a safety risk, such as imperceptible fraction-of-a-second red light incursions, slow, rolling right turns, and 15 mph school zone tickets when no children were present. Live police officers rarely cite for these violations, but the camera systems issue these tickets in the tens of thousands.

The City is rushing into this decision with NO PUBLIC INPUT!

Tell them you want:

• A 3 year safety study of the effectiveness of longer yellow light times and intersection improvements before any consideration of red light and speed cameras.
• Citizen Town Halls in each Council District to get public feedback on the use of ticketing cameras.
• A Council Subcommittee to create guidelines for any camera usage to ensure no police surveillance.
• Comprehensive Guidelines to ensure the program is not aimed at revenue generation and ensures equity.

What’s Next

The plan to bring back the cameras will be discussed next at the October 18th Transportation, Infrastructure, and Planning Subcommittee meeting chaired by Debra Stark, a Democrat who is a huge supporter of the cameras. Other members of the committee are Republican Ann O'Brien who is also a huge camera supporter, and Democrats Kesha Hodge Washington and Laura Pastor.
